Business Ethics in the Writing Community
After trying for several years to prepare novels for traditional publishing houses, I'm gradually being swayed into the self-publishing market. I'm particularly interested in Amazon's Kindle and Createspace POD publishing. I like the Kindle option because there are many ways for people to read novels, even if they don't own a Kindle! For example, you could do what I do, and download Kindle For PC ... for free! Then read Kindle books on your computer! Kindle editions are (1) less expensive for consumers, (2) 'green' as they require no tree-death procedures for paper-making, (3) better for authors as there's a greater profit-margin that cuts out agents and traditional book publishers. Excuse me if I think that's a good thing, especially after ten years of reading agent blogs like Ms. Snark that make fun of and put down authors... because there are so many authors they think they can get away with treating them like dirt, unless they want to profit off their hard work. Even agents should consider the implications their business ethics might have on future transactions, because the time has come when their services may no longer be needed, and authors will take other, more profitable paths to publication. Last night I had a dream in which a couple of cute little girls were trying to get me to buy the weirdest plastic ice cream scoop ever. I really didn't want to buy it - especially at the ridiculous price of $5. The older sister was particularly pushy and came to me multiple times trying to convince me to buy this thing. Finally I relented and agreed to purchase her ice cream scoop, and she just laughed and said, "I finally did it! And I don't like you!" I was appalled at her behavior! I hadn't given her the cash yet, so I informed this child I would not be buying her ice cream scoop after all, and that she needed to think seriously of how saying such a thing affects her business! Thank goodness this was just a dream! But then when I woke up I remembered a woman I know here in town. She was a co-worker who turned against me and treated me rather shabbily a few years back. Now she owns her own restaurant and I have never gone in there to patronize her. Because of her inexplicable disloyalty she has lost hundreds of dollars of business, not only from me but from others she treated in a very unkind manner. And that is how it should be. People need to realize that business is built, in large part, on the kindness and trustworthiness they can show to other people. Business is more than just finding ways to get money. It is a spiritual path, one of creating relationships with our fellow human beings, of respecting them, and showing them the utmost kindness. We are in business because we provide something they need, and for no other reason. Those agents that have been so harsh toward writers are in business because writers want them to find publishers for their work, but as soon as they treat writers shabbily and start complaining about them behind their backs, the bond of trust is broken and the writers sense this even if there are no harsh words exchanged. Therefore, as I go forth to publish my novels in Kindle format, and/or POD, I won't feel sad that an agent isn't involved, or a traditional book publisher. Though there are some excellent small press publishers available and accessible to new writers, it appears that most major publishing houses are not able to handle the massive numbers of manuscripts available. To most of us, their gates are closed, and their gatekeepers, the agents, have become difficult and unpleasant to deal with.

Foster children sue CPS and win $7.3 million
In Washington state three foster children sued CPS and won 7.3 million dollars. Apparently the three girls were placed with a man who had a criminal history. For ten years they tried to tell CPS social workers that they were being abused physically, sexually, mentally, emotionally ... everything! But the social workers ignored their pleas from 1996 to 2006. Finally in 2006 the fosterer (I can't call him a foster "parent") ... "foster abuser" would be a better term... well, finally in 2006 he was prosecuted for sexual abuse and possession of child porn. My question is why aren't the CPS social workers who participated in the cover-up of his abuse not being prosecuted? These negligent government workers should all be thrown in jail for their part in the abuse of these children. Every one of them should be found, even if they are no longer being employed by this agency, and rounded up and taken to criminal court for a child abuse and neglect trial. Until the child welfare system starts being honest enough to give these neglectful people up to the criminal justice system, we will not have true justice for children in this world. -
Now is the Time for Change
I just found this incredibly beautiful video... if you like children and want to be inspired. This is from the World Change Foundation.
The world is always changing, but in this era we're waking up to the potential of massive global transformation through the power of spirit working in the hearts of those who truly want to build a better world for the children, and their children, ad infinitum.
This has been on my mind most of the day, as I went about my work at home and then this afternoon while I attended a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce board of directors.
Everyone wants change, the world is changing. It is something that just has to be and as the time gets closer and the vibrations more intense, many thousands of people are realizing how very much the entire world needs spiritual change. And that is the only change that could make the difference in this world, to pull us out of the troubles we've drifted into.

Conference for Global Transformation
Imagine meeting with hundreds or even thousands of people who care about global transformation! There will be a conference in the San Francisco Bay Area in May of 2012... and there's a ning site set up to explain the entire thing: The Conference for Global Transformation. I happened to notice that a few of the presentation slideshows and handouts are already available online: Keynote and Workshop Resources. Also check out Best Papers Award Winners in the forum! see relatedOld LPs - Beatles Albums, in Particular!
I have a collection of old LP (long playing) vinyl record albums. I'm dividing them up. Most of them, I'd like to give away - but there are those Beatles albums - what are they worth? I found out... they're worth whatever you can get for them on eBay!
My oldest daughter is a Beatles fan. She's also got a very stable home life, and I'm thinking she's the one who should get all these old collectible vintage albums. But she'll probably never sell them. She really doesn't need the money anyhow; she and her hubby are both working and doing just fine, recession or not. But she would like having them.
Maybe when she's my age she'll think about selling them. Wouldn't that be cool if she could wait another thirty years and sell and make even more money than they're worth now. Meanwhile, though I love my Beatles albums I'm ready to bless someone else with them. I no longer have a phonograph to play them on but I think it is cool that there are phonographs you can buy that convert LP records to a digital format!

Reading - what I've read lately
On my list of things that are working well in my life, I'll put reading near the top. I made it a goal to read fifty books this year. So far I've read 27 books so I'm fairly well on track to meet my goal. A lot of those were audio books... I'm now reading one on Kindle for PC (a free app though the book cost nearly 10 dollars). I like both the book and the free Kindle app!
I'm a slow reader, so the audio books work well for me. Right now I'm reading one by Dr. Wayne Dyer. I just finished The Sound and the Fury by William Faulkner a few days ago - another audio book. Very trippy book written mostly in stream-of-consciousness from three different points of view. The first section was from the point of view of a retarded man, and it was so confusing... but once I figured out what was going on I just took it as it came and appreciated the experience for what it was.
Before that I read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls... an autobiography of an amazingly dysfunctional childhood. She's such a survivor!
On my TBR list I've got stuff listed such as Don Quixote - which is so long and tedious it is taking like forever to get through it. I can read about a chapter at night before sleeping. Sometimes less than a chapter. But I know if I keep at it I'll get through the very thick novel... maybe in a year or two..
Speaking of classics, one of my favorites is To Kill A Mockingbird ... if you haven't read it, take a look. (Or if you have...) That was named the best novel of the century and is a lot easier to read than Don Quixote or The Sound and the Fury.

Wasting Time
I wish I could be disciplined enough to resist wasting time. You know what I mean?
Nobody ever comments on this blog. I wonder if they read it.
Today I feel so much frustration. From several sources. But the most biting is my own inability to use my time to best advantage. I want to achieve so much, but instead end up listening to an internet radio show and playing backgammon with someone in France. Where is my head at?
I have so many creative pursuits... none of which are reaching fruition. What's wrong with me?
Just thought I'd ask.
But... since nobody reads this blog, I'm not expecting an answer.
Still, it is a good opportunity to let off steam anonymously.
Thanks...

Learning a New CMS (Impress)
Since I'm probably going to reopen my webdesign business, I'm learning a new CMS (content management system) called Impress by installing it on one of my sites, Perspectives on Writing. The site isn't being used yet and I have a lot of work to do on learning to set up this CMS.
When finished I want Perspectives on Writing to be a site for writing and critique groups for writers of various types. Each critique group will be limited to five participants, and they will focus on specific genres.
Once I get done learning Impress I'll be making templates and offering Impress setup to business owners.
After I'm an Impress expert, I'll move on to learning other CMSs... such as Drupal, Joomla, and Pligg. I'm already fairly proficient at setting up WordPress sites and customizing them.
Onward, toward a new business effort... hopefully.

Be Unique
I do a lot of content writing on the internet... and have met a lot of content writers. Consequently I sometimes get asked things like "why doesn't Google list my pages?" Most of the time the problem is that the content isn't unique. If a content writer copies things from others, or uses other people's ideas, their pages aren't likely to garner much attention. If they write about saturated niches, well hey, how will anyone ever find their pages in amongst the millions of others out there on the same topic?

My Bigfoot Education Continues
I’ve learned so much about Bigfoot in the last year, I don’t see how anyone cannot believe in them. I think that people don’t realize how much Bigfoot information is available these days.
It isn’t like the old days when all people had for proof was the Patterson-Gimlin film, and thought that it could have been Bob Heironimus with a fur suit, and that Ray Wallace was all over Northern California making fake footprints with wooden stompers. Strange how hoaxers can make the news but others can’t with real sightings. Of course those having real sightings often won’t mention it, especially to news media people, because they don’t want to be ridiculed and talked badly about.
Meanwhile, scientists have decided the Patterson-Gimlin "Patty" video was real... not a fur suit at all. Also they’ve examined footprint castings and declared them real. Yes, Ray Wallace, the jokester, had stompers made in big foot shapes, bit if you saw them you’d know in an instant they’re not the same shape as real Bigfoot footprint castings.
Problem is, people aren’t examining the evidence, so they’re stuck in the box of thinking of Bigfoot as a joke. But it isn’t a joke at all. It is real. For most people this means nothing, really. Why should they care? They’re stuck in cities where they’ll never have to think about Bigfoot anyhow. But I’m in the forest. There have been Bigfoot sightings less than a mile from my home... so I’ve immersed myself in the study of Bigfoot with my blog, Bigfoot Sightings. And I’ve learned a lot about the realities, the sightings, and the truths.
What’s really cool is that squatching has become a name for a new hobby. It refers to people going out into the forest to a place where a Bigfoot has been seen before, and doing things to try to attract Bigfoot to them so they can have a sighting. Many squatchers have objectives such as trying to capture one, or just trying to prove they’re real.
My objective is to try to communicate with one. I don’t care to let the world in on my secret either. I want to be there to talk to them, to find some way of clear communication so I can ask them about their lives and find out what they think of us. To this end I’m using many means of training myself in the psychic arts plus am prepared mentally to start a conversation with one if I should see one in the course of my squatching activities.

Bigfoot Research in Northern California and Southern Oregon
Since 2005 I've been involved in Bigfoot research in Northern California and Southern Oregon... my home territory. I live fifty-five miles from Bluff Creek, the site of the 1967 Bigfoot film by Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin. I've been fascinated by Bigfoot for many years but started my research projects only a few years back due to frustration that my local community knew so little about local sightings, yet named multiple businesses after Bigfoot, and had Bigfoot statues and pictures all over town.
When I started my research project few people knew of any local sightings. Now I've compiled multiple reports and have a growing body of evidence. For example, Oregon Caves - A Bigfoot Sighting Location tells the story of a very credible sighting only about thirty miles north of Happy Camp, as the crow flies. Also Bigfoot Sightings Near Happy Camp tells about sightings less than a mile from my home.
I'm starting a Bigfoot Reading Group - our first book will be Tribal Bigfoot - a newly published Bigfoot book that describes sightings in my county, and many other Northern California counties. The reading group will start in September - and I've placed an announcement on my Bigfoot blog, Bigfoot Sightings.
Need any more evidence? Check out Bigfoot Videos and my other blog, Friends of Sasquatch, which focuses on the facilitation of interspecies communication through subtle energies.

Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet Day
August 12 is Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet Day and I hope with all my heart that people will consider pets with problems when they are ready to adopt.
Problems?
Yes...
Older pets are the ones that have the hardest time finding new homes.
Pets with medical problems are also high on the list of pets that can't get adopted.
Third - pets who are victims of breed prejudice.
Recently I've adopted three homeless black cats. Too often black shelter cats are overlooked in favor of cats with markings. It breaks my heart that these precious creatures are under-appreciated, so I wrote about it: Black Cats Need Love Too!
My plea for black cats: If you're going to adopt a cat with markings, please consider adopting a black cat at the same time. They are usually well mannered and very grateful for all the affection they receive.

Looking for positive energy
I'm learning to eliminate all negative energies from my spirit body... and find that difficult in front of a computer. The computer drains me. Nature refreshes and revives me.

Civilization
I live in a remote river valley, so when I'm forced to go shopping in the big city I'll have one of two common reactions to the experience. Sometimes I feel it is a blast to get out of the valley and experience the hustle-bustle population explosion of a bigger town. Then there are days like today when I feel alarmed by the hugeness of the human settlement, and long to go home to the boonies.
We drove into Medford this morning and went to a Chinese restaurant for lunch. That part was alright. Then we went shopping at Win-Co. That was moderately stressful. Next we got gas and proceeded to Walmart for a few cheap provisions. Before long I was wandering through the store looking for my best friend, buddy, and very significant other, looking at things and thinking "I don't need that. I don't need that either. I don't NEED any of this stuff!" I got only the few items on my list and then announced I was ready to go. He got a few goodies for his fishing kit and we headed home again. I was so happy to retreat!
On the way back into California (yes, we have to cross the Oregon border to shop) we were stopped by a state employee asking if we had any fruit or live plants. This agricultural inspection has been going on for many decades, but in my many trips across the border in the last five years or so, we've been allowed to pass uninspected -- they were stopping trucks only. I don't know why they are suddenly doing agricultural inspections for cars again. It is no big deal. We stop, an agent asks if we have the forbidden objects, and we say "no"... then are waved through. It isn't like they actually insist on looking through our grocery sacks. Fortunately we didn't have fruit or live plants... I would hate to buy a bag of oranges then have to turn it in at the border. We live only twenty miles south of the Oregon-California border and nowhere near any orange trees. I don't think they do well in our climate - but there are a lot of old apple trees; you have to know where to look for them.
I get enough "civilization" from checking it out on the Internet... I don't need to be out in it to be happy.
